Point Clouds
High-Resolution 3D Data for a Precise Digital World
Point clouds may look like simple clusters of dots, but they’re actually one of the most powerful tools for transforming real-world environments into highly detailed, measurable digital data that engineers, researchers, and operators can analyze and act upon.
What is a Point Cloud?
A point cloud is a dense set of spatial data points, each defined by X, Y, and Z coordinates and often color or intensity values.
Together, these millions, or even billions, of points form a highly accurate 3D representation of an object or environment.
Essentially, it’s a high-resolution spatial map capturing precise measurements, surface topology, and structural details for use in modeling, analysis, and simulation.

How Point Clouds are Generated
Point clouds can be produced using several advanced techniques:
Photogrammetry - Uses overlapping high-resolution images and computer vision algorithms to reconstruct 3D geometry.
Acoustic or Sonar Scanning – Essential underwater, where lasers and light can’t penetrate effectively.
Light Detection and Ranging – Sends laser pulses and calculates their return time to map precise distances.
Each method yields a “raw” point cloud that can be filtered, aligned, and meshed into 3D models or digital twins.
Why Point Clouds Matter

Point clouds deliver millimeter-level accuracy for inspection, measurement, and structural analysis, enabling true-to-scale digital twins and thorough documentation for audits or future planning.
They support predictive maintenance, simulation, and precise decision-making across industries from civil engineering and aerospace to offshore energy and environmental monitoring, while reducing fieldwork and repeat site visits.
Underwater, however, this process is more demanding. Limited visibility, suspended particles, and moving currents require robust navigation, high-sensitivity imaging, and specialized software to counter distortion and noise.
Blue Atlas Robotics and Sentinus ROV

To meet these challenges, Blue Atlas Robotics developed the Sentinus ROV.
Visual datasets captured from vessel hulls and subsea structures are converted into dense 3D point clouds and models. These outputs integrate with AI-driven analysis, enabling operators to detect issues, perform precise measurements, and plan maintenance efficiently, reducing reliance on costly diver interventions.
